Music production lessons on production and how to record music are offered from a home studio in Edinburgh by Andrew Rankine, the company owner. As an experienced producer, he will give you classes – mainly on a one-to-one basis, though this can be negotiated – at any level, with very competitive rates and a relaxed atmosphere. Furthermore, if you live further away, we can easily hold sessions over Zoom. We offer lessons for beginners, intermediate, and advanced audio producers.

Regarding our experience, past projects include songs that have charted, ranging across punk, rock, funk, pop, death & black metal, and reggae bands, as well as ADR dubbing and hip-hop, rap, and grime vocalists. In addition to music production, we also record audiobooks, voice-overs, and podcasts. Consequently, we have had the privilege to work with major brands such as the BBC, Disney, Pixar, Alcatrazz, Blumhouse, Cartoon Network, Vodafone, Universal, Hachette Book Group & Orbit, and Glenmorangie Whisky.
How long should I book?
It depends on how you learn best. A typical session is 1 to 2 hours long. Any longer, and you may not retain all the information covered. Sessions can be held weekly or as often as you’d like.
During your time with us, the lessons will teach you how to approach dance music production, pop, metal/rock, urban, hip-hop, band recording, and acoustic/solo artist recording techniques. Ultimately, any style of music can be covered, and any specific aspect can be focused on. Songwriting, band recording, electronic music, and anything else audio-related can be covered. For instance, we can work on Ableton Live, Pro Tools, or Logic Pro X, amongst others. We can also explore a host of plug-ins such as Waves, SPL, PSP Audioware, and SoundToys.
What should I prepare?
Coming to the lessons with questions you have about problems you have encountered. Thinking about what you would particularly like to learn about is very helpful in directing the lessons to suit your needs and so that we cover topics that are useful and practical for you specifically.
Each lesson plan is different, so we’d be happy to provide a tailored quotation.
BEGINNERS COURSE:
Absolute beginners will benefit greatly from this course. Initially, you will learn how to use the essential aspects of your production software. You will record and mix tracks, and create music/beats using samples and synthesizers. We can look at how to finalise a mix for commercial use. Meanwhile, your skills will continue to develop further with the help of tips, tricks, and exercises to carry out.
INTERMEDIATE COURSE:
On the other hand, individuals who already know the basics of music production – but have areas in which they need targeted tutoring – will find this course useful. Through this tailored approach, you will be able to progress onto the next level of creating professional-quality sound. Specifically, we cover microphone placement/techniques, EQ-ing, effects, sound placement, mixing, and mastering.
ADVANCED COURSE:
Finally, an important part of sound production is mastering the technical details of how to make the most of your production software. In this course, you will learn the tricks of the trade in getting the best possible sound from your production tools. Above all, fine-tuning a mix or master and making your music stand out from the rest will be the core focus.
